CSA Encounters, April 10 – 160


Spring is a time of renewal, of new beginnings, and we are seeing this promise growing in our fields at Suzie’s Farm.
In the west end of our fields the fragrance of green garlic grows stronger as the day warms.
The strawberries are bearing fruit and the white turnip tops are waving gaily in the breeze.

The crew has been planting new seedlings of summer squash and cucumbers, padron peppers and hot peppers, and the young plants bend easily in the breeze. Snap peas look tentative. The lettuce varieties, ever faithful, are growing well. Some brassicas of kale, cabbage and kohlrabi and root vegetables of carrots and beets remain from the winter season. Tomato seedlings will be planted next month.

Our sunflowers stand tall and erect, like sentinels following the path of the sun, with their vibrant golden heads. Hilary Kearney, thegirlnextdoorhoney.com has a colony of bees in the east end of our fields and she says that the pollen produced by our sunflower field has greatly improve the health of the bees. Promising!

It thrills our hearts to see the crew planting the spring & summer crops in our fields. We hear reports from farms in northern California about how spring planting has been delayed many times due to the abundance of water they have and are still receiving this year. The mud making it difficult to get the tractors and crew out to the fields and taking advantage of the breaks between the storms to groom the soil and plant the seeds. Farming must truly be a labor of love and devotion.
